Feb 5- Feb 12 Weeks left: 0!

The last week of cosplay construction is always the hardest. You are desperately trying to get everything finished, fix any problems that arise in the cos test, and keep your stress level at a manageable level. Oof, it’s a lot.  Fortunately, the excitement of the con, seeing things coming together and the promise of friends and family keeps you going!

I worked on the Design for the cape, put it through the Cricut and we transferred it to the cape. A simple detail but very fun to recreate.  It’s great to have a Cricut now to help with those little details.

In the shop we were all a buzz with the cos test.  Getting the “collar to stay on with basically binder clips (but stronger) we placed them on the helmet and made sure I could move around in the suit.  By placing a fan at my back in the corset blowing up my back and into the helmet was a fantastic addition.

Then came all the Circular Gallifreyan. I thought, ‘This will be easy for me and only take a few hours.’ After DAYS of drawing on the circular gallifreyan I was spent.  It’s a beautiful effect and I wouldn’t change it.  From all the reference photos I had gathered I tried to make it as screen accurate as possible, but I didn’t have reference of the back of some pieces.  I decided to write the names of those who helped me make the suit, the names of the Doctor actors, and the names of the CyberMaster Leader creature actor and the classic creature actor of the Cyberman as well.

Now it’s about packing this thing in a suitcase and making sure it doesn’t get munched before getting there. Good vibes Geeks and we will see you at the con!

It’s so close Geeks! The excitement is starting to show up.

All pieces have been Plasti-dipped but still need a coat of Silver and a black acrylic was for the shadows to really define the pieces. Putting on the pieces and starting to wear it feels surreal.  I can’t believe we made this! The helmet needs more work and needs the “collar” as well as the Mohawk piece with the light.  I’m hoping the collar fits the helmet perfectly.

In the shop, Appa gives me a hand shake of luck as we start to assemble the last bits of the costume. We put Velcro on the bicep pieces to wrap around my arm, but really spent most of the time placing Worbla over the helmet (except the faceplate) to give the helmet the stability it will need to hold up the collar and keep its shape.

Worbla is a funny material.  If you haven’t used it before, Worbla is a thermoplastic that when heated becomes malleable and almost leathery.  Once it cools it is a hard, ridged, cut table plastic.  It took all three of us to hold the helmet steady, heat up the Worbla and meld it around the helmet. It sticks to itself so you have to be careful that while heating it doesn’t touch anything you don’t want it to.  It cooled quickly and I tried it on.  It was hitting hard against my nose!!! An easy fix. We placed some cheek pads that will sit on my cheeks and take all the pressure off my nose.  It worked!

Next week, I need to paint, put on the circular gallifreyan, and make the cape.  Time is running out! Anyone have a TARDIS so I can get some more time on this?!?!

Jan 22- Jan 29: Weeks left -2!

Ooooh It’s almost done!. The pieces are almost assembled and painting is underway!  Sorry sorry, let me back up a bit.

Spikes were glued to the boot covers, thighs, pauldrons and bracers. Each of these spikes is a different size and needed to be put on in a certain order.  The Bracers were made and a foam “weapon” attached to the right arm.  It’s amazing how much detail there is just in structure alone.  We had a big conversation about what details to keep and what aren’t needed.

A corset was purchased and and fabric was placed over along with silver painted foam strips. The hardest part of this was making sure to stretch the fabric enough that, when put on me, it wouldn’t break or tear. The fabric piece is velcroed onto the corset so it can be placed at just the right amount of stretch.

Also, the biggest news of all: the collar came in! Thanks to a friend, I was able to give him the design and he laser cut the piece out for me and sent it.  It looks absolutely amazing!! I can’t wait to spray paint it gold and attach it to the helmet.  These cellar pieces are going to be removable for transport and storage reasons.

I started working on spraying Palsti-dip on some pieces, but it snowed and has been really cold, making the paint want to dribble instead of spray. It’s also making things dry strangely. So This next week I will be adding Velcro and attachment parts to everything and painting everything when the weather is better.
